An impromptu road-trip where we end up in a postcard sunset

Are the clouds always this beautiful in January? Those pink and purple hues!

It was so cold out I stayed in the car most of the time, taking pictures through the windshield. In that last picture I was sitting in the car wrapped in my coat thinking: these tourists don’t have jackets on! Aren’t they freezing?

But it was an incredible sunset. It’s easy to forget sometimes, to stop and watch the sunset. A nearby road sign says “Aphrodite’s birthplace.” On days like these it seems entirely appropriate.

Portraits (Happy New Year, everyone!)

Happy New Year, friends.

Let’s hope it’s a good one, full of shiny new things, friends and family, and lots of good music and things to read.

I always like to start the new year with something new, so this year: portraits.

These are portraits of just a few of the wonderful people I spent time with in 2012.

signs of spring.

In search of rivers. And a reservoir.

We went in search of rivers.

One of us made his own pinhole camera. The other used a digital one.

It rained so much this year in Cyprus that reservoirs have become gathering places. And where there’s people, there are sandwich trucks. And ice-cream.

The men in the hats sold clay wares and other little things. They hung out in the sun and enjoyed the sunshine.

Where there are rivers, there are often ancient bridges.

There’s something really cool about walking on a medieval bridge.

And sometimes, if you know where to get off the highway, you can follow a river all the way to the sea.

a good week that ended with an angel in the snow

Our publishing house’s first book Nicosia in Dark and White won a prestigious POYi Book of the Year award

It snowed in Nicosia (this happens less often than a leap year)

Wrote a new short story

Spent all Saturday in Troodos playing with the snow [snow angel not pictured]

A good week indeed

Snow falling on tropical trees and our little fish pond

I made these as a tribute to Bill Watterson

after the storm…

We went to eat at this little restaurant by the beach. The rain started falling as soon as we sat down and continued all the way through lunch. But when we walked out to leave, the rain stopped and the sun peeked through the clouds. Making everything impossibly bright and contrasty.

We drove up the coast stopping to look at the waves along the way.

something new for a new year

I give you…
a film of a Mysterious Pier.

I actually made this film last month when I was playing with my new pinhole cap. It just took a while to figure out how to edit it… Not bad for first try ever, no?

Some previous unedited but very fun attempts san pinhole in reverse chronological order:

Fanfarlo. They’re [relatively] new and shiny and really good. I hope to see them again this year.

And of course The Flaming Lips. One of the best bands to see live, ever. (Happy birthday, Wayne! ♥)

Happy new year, readers and friends. May it be the best one yet.

xoxo
