Sunset Unseen: two stories in the Offing

2016-07-22_002651

I have two new micro-stories in the Offing! Go read them! And I hope your summer is good, and that you are safe, wherever you are, surrounded by friends and loved ones. It’s been pretty weird around here on planet Earth lately… xxx

Stolen Stationery

Working on a wonderful wonderful new book.

Related/not related/subtle hint: this story in letter form I wrote a while ago: A letter from the Chateau Marmont. “Stolen Stationery.”

You can read it in The Rumpus where it was published last summer.

The Cats Want to Know

A little story about cats, published in Visual Verse

CATS

The Cats Want to Know

The cats want to know where you’ve been. They come and smell your clothes, rub their noses on your shoes, sniff your soles for clues. They are excited at the hint of a world outside of their zone of things comfortable and known. They are surprised you’ve been gone this long and that you’re suddenly back.

[RE]SISTERS

UnderTheHole

My story Under the Hole is in a rad new anthology by the awesome For Books’ Sake!

(RE)Sisters […] the anthology features the best new fiction from emerging women writers from across the globe.

Featuring a diverse range of characters, genres, styles and subject matters, the eighteen stories in (RE)Sisters include; a dystopian world where skin colour is changed by a sinister procedure; a spelling bee that stings like a wasp; a girl kept captive by a man with no heart; an indefinite hospital quarantine; a runaway best friend; a lost habit of checking shoes for scorpions; an abandoned bathtub; a stolen hot air balloon, and much, much more besides. […]

A fierce, fearless and topical tribute to girls’ rebellion and resistance, (RE)Sisters is defiant, distinctive and unapologetic. Just like its heroines.

Coming out next month, available to pre-order here.

The Mark and the Void and the Polaroid

Yay, one of my Writers in Polaroids pictures ended up on the inside cover of a great book! Paul Murray’s The Mark and the Void.

The polaroid can be found in this old post here. It was taken at the beautiful Atlantis Books.

J. Robert Lennon interviewed me for Okey-Panky

A couple weeks ago Okey-Panky published my story β€œThe Winner.” After, editor-in-chief J. Robert Lennon had a few questions for me. You can read the interview here!

Stolen Stationery: a new story in The Rumpus

WISH-YOU-WERE-HERE

I had a dream about you again.

You were writing WISH YOU WERE HERE with giant letters on the roofs of buildings and I was flying over them thinking about you. Then they became alphabet blocks in the window of a store as I walked by. They spelled β€œCome Home.”

Read the rest of the story in The Rumpus Readers Report: Summer Fever, edited by Susan Clements (and accompanied by the lovely illustrations of Christina Weidman.)

This is my third story in The Rumpus! And my second letter story published this summer! (A third one is coming up soon.)

Previous The Rumpus stories:

β‰ˆ Future Past Postcard

β‰ˆ The Midnight Sun

Story in The Letters Page:

β‰ˆ Layover Jetlag Lei Plane Ghost Love

New story: Layover Jetlag Lei Plane Ghost Love

I have a story in the new issue of The Letters Page.

A story I hand-wrote and sent in a letter that was then deciphered and typed by someone at The Letters Page offices (most likely a handwriting expert.)

Download the issue to print out and read (PDF) And then put in an envelope and send to a friend. Everyone loves getting mail!

news!

01_matchbookstories_3

I’ve been away from the blog for a while, mostly working on Matchbook Stories Issue 3 (now on pre-order, coming out July 22nd!), reading submissions for Issue 4, and planning new Book Ex Machina things. Also: writing! I got two stories accepted for publication in two of my favorite literary places: Electric Literature (their newest coolest magazine Okey-Panky) and The Letters Page.

Here’s to the next half of the year!

News! Links! Etc.!

So many good Matchbook Stories things happened lately! With Issue 2 out we started work on what promises to be an amazing Issue 3; also on some other great Book Ex Machina projects. To top that, one of my stories got nominated for The Best Small Fictions of 2015. What a great way to start the new year!

For more Book Ex Machina news check the tumblrΒ  and the blog; to find out about upcoming events, the events page and the Facebook.

And now because that was a lot of information, here’s a picture of a Totoro I made using this pattern.

xoxo
