01_matchbookstories_3

I’ve been away from the blog for a while, mostly working on Matchbook Stories Issue 3 (now on pre-order, coming out July 22nd!), reading submissions for Issue 4, and planning new Book Ex Machina things. Also: writing! I got two stories accepted for publication in two of my favorite literary places: Electric Literature (their newest coolest magazine Okey-Panky) and The Letters Page.

Here’s to the next half of the year!

News! Links! Etc.!

So many good Matchbook Stories things happened lately! With Issue 2 out we started work on what promises to be an amazing Issue 3; also on some other great Book Ex Machina projects. To top that, one of my stories got nominated for The Best Small Fictions of 2015. What a great way to start the new year!

For more Book Ex Machina news check the tumblr  and the blog; to find out about upcoming events, the events page and the Facebook.

And now because that was a lot of information, here’s a picture of a Totoro I made using this pattern.

xoxo

The Midnight Sun

2013-11-05_165036

There’s nothing to do here, so I get in my car and drive. I improvise, even though there’s nowhere to go, and I end up at the Midnight Sun getting a burger

My story was published in The Rumpus. YAY!

Read it here.

Oxford – If I Could Tell You book launch

Of course when I arrived it rained. But I was there for my friend Jing’s book launch, so hurray!

I was so excited I almost forgot to take pictures, which was my de facto job. (There are just  a few more posted on our Shy Oxford Writers page.)

I did remember to take a video of Jing reading an extract from If I Could Tell You. (see below.)

And after, the sun came out. [To be continued…]

The Last Time I was Near a Volcano

IMG_4895

The last time I was near a volcano it was in Hawaii and this guy was trying to get me to go on a helicopter ride over Mauna Loa on the Big Island and look at the lava.

No thanks, I said, thinking how a few months back one of those helicopters had crashed on the side of the mountain and sent its passengers to a premature and useless death.

This story was just published in Straw Dogs magazine.

Lucky Cat

Super excited to be published, in audio form, in the wonderful literary magazine The Drum.

The story is called Lucky Cat. (Like one of these guys, seen below in Polaroid form.)

You can listen to the story here.

Portraits (Happy New Year, everyone!)

Happy New Year, friends.

Let’s hope it’s a good one, full of shiny new things, friends and family, and lots of good music and things to read.

I always like to start the new year with something new, so this year: portraits.

These are portraits of just a few of the wonderful people I spent time with in 2012.
